Recently, there has been a downturn in public transit use in many areas of the country. Being pointed to as more post-pandemic fallout, public transit use is down in some of the places that need it the most — our urban centers. According to data from the American Public Transportation System, a slow rise started last year, from a pandemic-baseline level that must have included mostly essential workers. That rise hasn’t yet reached pre-pandemic levels, with cities like New York and Chicago showing major dips in ridership. However, other data shows that even pre-pandemic, American public transit use had been trending down for a number of years.

What do you think the main reason for this is? What do you think some possible solutions might entail?
